Jackson's story
Jackson recently came to Helping Strays after spending his first few years on a farm. While probably not a purebred Australian Cattle dog, Jackson exhibits many of the typical characteristics of the breed: very athletic, enjoys romping and roughhousing, can be dominant and pushy with other dogs, strong chasing drive and tendency to nip at whatever he is pursuing; not recommended to be around cats unless raised with them. Cattle dogs are absolutely NOT suitable for apartment life. For fitness and mental wellness, cattle dogs require lots of exercise; working livestock, agility, biking, chasing balls, and playing Frisbee are productive outlets for this breed's high energy. Their boundless energy makes them great running partners. Cooping a cattle dog up with nothing to do will lead to destructive behaviors and obsessive barking. This is what the American Kennel Club says about Australian Cattle Dogs: "A challenging combination of cleverness and hard-headedness, Australian Cattle Dogs (ACDs) will test members of the family during adolescence and must be handled with firm, consistent leadership. These versatile dogs can learn and do a great deal in the right hands, but they will run right over hapless owners. These resilient herders are intelligent enough to routinely outsmart their owners. ACDs are true-blue loyal, famously smart, ever alert, and wary of strangers. If an ACD isnt challenged, he easily becomes bored and gets into mischief. It is recommended that ACD owners participate with their dog in some work, sport, or regular exercise to keep him mentally and physically fit."
